Ogun State has mandated a six-year textbook cycle and restricted school graduations to curb costs and promote moderation.

The Ogun State Government has directed all schools to observe a six-year cycle before changing textbooks and has banned elaborate graduation ceremonies.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, announced the policy while briefing journalists on preparations for the 2024/2025 academic session. He explained that the measures aim to reduce financial pressure on parents and discourage the “rising culture of excesses” at school events.

“Graduation ceremonies should be modest and reflect true academic milestones, rather than turning into lavish social events,” Arigbabu stated. He added that schools may only hold official celebrations at three key transition levels and warned that institutions imposing unnecessary textbook changes would face sanctions. According to him, “Quality education does not depend on frequent textbook changes but on effective teaching and the proper use of available resources.”

The commissioner assured that the ministry will monitor compliance, urging parents, teachers and administrators to support the initiative, which aligns with broader reforms to make education affordable and impactful.
