Ahmadu Bello University has dismissed as false an AI-generated video alleging its involvement in developing a nuclear weapon, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful nuclear research.
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State, has debunked a viral AI-generated video alleging that it was involved in developing a nuclear weapon for Nigeria.
The university’s Director of Public Affairs, Malam Auwalu Umar, in a statement, described the video as “misleading, baseless, unfounded, and unsubstantiated,” adding that it sought to misinform the public about Nigeria’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.
He said the video falsely claimed that Nigerian scientists in the 1980s secretly enriched weapons-grade uranium and that ABU obtained centrifugal equipment from Pakistan’s AQ Khan network. Umar explained that during that period, most ABU scientists at the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) were still in training abroad.
He clarified that ABU’s only nuclear facility then was a 14 MeV Neutron Generator, while Nigeria’s first reactor, NIRR-1, was established in 1996 under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s cooperation.
Umar emphasized that Nigeria’s nuclear programme remains transparent and peaceful, consistent with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Pelindaba treaties.
“ABU has always pursued peaceful applications of nuclear science for national development,” he said.
