Armed policemen stormed the Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja, attacking Omoyele Sowore, lawyers, and food vendors during a bail hearing.
Armed policemen on Friday disrupted proceedings at the Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja, assaulting human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, lawyers, and food vendors during his bail hearing.
Sowore, who was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly violating a court order over the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, was granted bail when police stormed the premises to rearrest him.
Witnesses said the officers beat Sowore, tore his clothes, and bundled him into a police vehicle. “The police were visibly disappointed because the court granted Sowore bail,” his lawyer, Tope Temokun, said. “They descended on everyone, lawyers, observers, and even food vendors.”
Temokun, who sustained injuries, called the incident “a gross violation of human rights” and urged the Attorney-General and the Nigerian Bar Association to intervene.
He warned that the police’s disregard for court orders could erode public confidence in the judiciary. Sowore’s current whereabouts remain unknown.
