ADC coalition shaky as key leaders delay formal registration

ADC’s momentum is faltering as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi hesitate to formally join, raising doubts about the opposition’s strength in 2027.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is struggling to sustain momentum as leading opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have yet to formally join the party.

Daily Post gathered that while Atiku and Obi were central to the coalition of opposition leaders who adopted the ADC as their platform, both men remain hesitant about full membership.

Atiku has quit the Peoples Democratic Party but remains without a political base, while Obi has insisted he will not abandon the Labour Party despite backing coalition activities.

Party insiders revealed growing concern within the ADC National Working Committee that the refusal of the two heavyweights to register at ward levels could weaken the coalition’s credibility and expose it to legal challenges under the Electoral Act 2022.

Rumours of Obi returning to the PDP have further fueled uncertainty, even as ADC leaders insist he remains committed to the party’s cause. Analysts warn that the indecision could fracture opposition unity ahead of 2027.

Meanwhile, former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi has already taken the ADC to his home state, becoming the only coalition leader whose intentions appear clear.
