The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has opposed the plan by the National Assembly to move the 2027 general elections to November 2026, warning it would disrupt governance and development planning.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act seeking to move Nigeria’s 2027 general elections to November 2026.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the plan would “push Nigeria into a state of permanent electioneering” and weaken governance.
“By cutting the current political calendar by six months, the proposal threatens to push Nigeria into a state of permanent electioneering, where politics dominates governance and development is perpetually on hold,” Abdullahi said.
He added that moving the polls forward would shorten governance time, stall policy implementation, and worsen the distraction of public officials.
The ADC urged lawmakers to focus instead on electoral and judicial reforms that guarantee credible elections and timely resolution of disputes, citing Kenya, Ghana, and Indonesia as examples where judicial efficiency—not shorter calendars—ensures quick electoral justice.
