Nafi’u Bala, a former deputy chairman and ex-governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has declared himself interim national chairman, accusing David Mark’s leadership of unlawfully hijacking the party.

At a press conference in Abuja, Bala condemned what he described as “political hooliganism,” saying the current leadership “plunged our party into a needless crisis.” He vowed to challenge the takeover in court, asserting that only “bonafide” party members have the authority to lead.

The crisis follows the ADC’s recent adoption by top opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir el-Rufai, as a coalition platform for the 2027 elections. Party founder Ralph Nwosu resigned the National Working Committee in July, endorsing Mark’s interim leadership.

Bala claimed the takeover was orchestrated by “political strangers” and violated the party’s constitution. “We shall proceed with gusto to challenge these gross acts of impunity in the courts,” he declared, urging INEC to recognise him as chairman.
