Medical and nutrition experts have urged adults aged 40 and above to be cautious with cold beverage consumption, especially in cold weather.

Speaking in Abakaliki on Saturday, they warned that while cold drinks are generally safe, they could trigger discomfort or worsen symptoms in those with health conditions.

Nutritionist Dr Maryrose Onuora said “very cold beverages” may cause digestive discomfort, slow gastric emptying, or lead to bloating. She added that they could trigger headaches in migraine sufferers. “Adults over 40 should be careful when taking very chilled beverages, especially in cold weather, and particularly if they have a history of cardiovascular problems,” she said.

Cardiologist Dr John Ogazi noted that icy drinks can cause temporary changes in heart rate and blood pressure, advising those with heart conditions to avoid them after strenuous activity.

Dr Festus Onwe warned that cold drinks may worsen tooth sensitivity and respiratory issues. The experts recommended warm or room-temperature water for people with chronic ailments.
