The Afriland Towers fire in Lagos has claimed 10 lives, including six United Capital staff and four Federal Inland Revenue Service employees.

The death toll from the Afriland Towers fire in Lagos has risen to 10 after United Capital Plc confirmed on Thursday that it lost six staff members.

The tragedy follows Wednesday’s announcement by the Federal Inland Revenue Service that four of its employees also died in the inferno, which engulfed the eight-storey building on Broad Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze, reportedly triggered by an inverter explosion in the basement, spread thick smoke through the tower, forcing many occupants to flee. Some were seen attempting to escape through windows as emergency responders battled the flames.

Rescue teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service evacuated nine people, reviving five, while four remained unconscious.

“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues,” the company said, adding preparations are underway for a memorial service.

Authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure.
