After 31 Years, U.S. Ends Case Against Late Nigerian Senator Kashamu Following DNA Confirmation

Charges were first filed against the late Mr Kashamu on March 17, 1994, after the U.S. government accused him of leading an international drug ring.

The United States has officially withdrawn its long-standing narcotics case against the late Nigerian politician, Buruji Kashamu, following DNA confirmation of his death in 2020. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois dismissed the charges on April 18, 2025, acknowledging that prosecution was no longer feasible.

Kashamu had been indicted in 1994 for allegedly leading an international drug trafficking network. His legal team contended that the case was a result of mistaken identity, a claim supported by a 2003 British court ruling that found the U.S. authorities had falsified evidence. The case, which inspired the Netflix series “Orange Is The New Black,” has now been officially closed after over three decades.
