MOKWA, Nigeria – May 30, 2025 – A catastrophic flood has claimed over 100 lives in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, with more than 100 people still missing as of Friday, following torrential rainfall on Wednesday night. The devastating deluge submerged homes and swept away residents, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations.
Niger State Deputy Governor, Mr. Yakubu Garba, confirmed the grim toll during a visit to Mokwa, stating, “I was told that over 100 people lost their lives and some have yet to be buried as search and rescue operations are still ongoing.” So far, at least 75 victims have been buried.
Local residents described unprecedented devastation, with one teacher, Alhassan Kolo, reporting over 40 burials on Friday alone, excluding many unaccounted for Almajirai (Qur’anic school pupils). “This flood is beyond our imagination,” Kolo said. Survivor Anas Usman tragically recounted losing 17 family members.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating rescue efforts. The floods also destroyed vital infrastructure, including the Tatabu Bridge, a key link between Nigeria’s north and southwest. President Bola Tinubu has ordered an intensification of rescue and relief efforts for the affected communities.
