As AI adoption accelerates, traditional tech roles like software and project managers are declining while demand surges for specialists in cybersecurity, data analytics, and AI development.
The tech employment landscape is undergoing a dramatic realignment as artificial intelligence reshapes the kinds of roles companies need. According to an Indeed-commissioned study cited by Business Insider Africa, some tech positions now face a surplus of candidates while others lack enough qualified talent.
“What began as a cyclical downturn in tech hiring may now be entering a new phase — one shaped by the rise of AI, increased requirements, and less demand for entry-level talent,” the report warns. The research combined job posting data from Indeed and Glassdoor with a YouGov survey of over 1,000 tech professionals.
Among the roles most impacted by AI-inspired restructuring are software engineers, quality assurance engineers, product managers, and project managers. In contrast, fields like cybersecurity, data analytics, and AI development are seeing severe skill shortages.
Employers now place growing emphasis on hybrid skill clusters. Python, SQL, AWS, DevOps, machine learning, and CI/CD are increasingly bundled together in job requirements — reflecting expectations that professionals “partner with AI tools to drive efficiency, strengthen data analysis, and more.”
