The Air India flight was carrying 242 people when it crashed into a medical college hostel moments after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. Just one person survived, the airline has said.

Tributes are pouring in after Air India Flight 171 crashed into a medical college hostel moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was en route to Gatwick, UK. The sole survivor is a British man from Leicester.

The victims included several UK families. Dr Prateek Joshi, a Derby radiologist, died alongside his wife and three children. Akeel Nanabawa, wife Hannaa Vorajee, and daughter Sara from Gloucester were also lost. The Ali Syed family of four were returning from a holiday.

Among the other victims were sisters Heer and Dhir Baxi, Kent couple Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, and three members of the Modha family from Northamptonshire.

Colleagues and relatives described the deceased as kind, passionate, and widely respected. Imam Abdullah Samad said, “They were deeply loved… their daughter lit up every room she entered.”

An investigation into the cause is underway.
