Two Nigerian military officers are on the run as authorities intensify arrests and interrogation over an alleged coup plot to overthrow the democratic government.
Two military officers are on the run after being named among those accused of plotting a coup to end Nigeria’s democratic rule, TheCable reports.
Sources said the military has expanded its arrests following the interrogation of 16 suspects detained in early October over the alleged failed plot.
Eighteen officers were reportedly marked for arrest, but two—identified as Major J.M. Ganaks (N/14363) and Captain G. Binuga (N/167722)—fled and are believed to have left the country.
Ganaks, from the Federal Capital Territory, belongs to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 58 and was stationed in Jaji, Kaduna State. Binuga, from Taraba State, of Regular Course 64, was posted to DHQ SOF, Bida, Niger State.
Sources disclosed that “some of the arrested suspects have made useful statements,” leading to additional arrests, bringing the total number of detained officers to over 30.
While some detainees remain silent, others are reportedly “very cooperative.”
Contrary to speculation, the coup was not planned for October 1, as arrests began in the first week of the month.
The Defence Headquarters has not confirmed the plot, describing the probe as a “routine internal process.”
