The U.S. passport now ranks 10th globally, offering visa-free access to 182 destinations — behind Singapore, Japan, and several European nations.
The United States has dropped to 10th place in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, with American passport holders now able to access 182 destinations visa-free or with visa on arrival.
Singapore leads the global ranking, offering access to 193 destinations, making its passport the most powerful in the world. Japan and South Korea follow in second with 190 destinations, while seven European nations — including Germany, France, and Italy — share third place with 189 destinations.
The United Kingdom ranks sixth, with access to 186 destinations, ahead of Canada and the UAE in eighth with 184. The U.S. shares tenth place with Iceland and Lithuania.
At the bottom is Afghanistan, with only 25 destinations accessible without a visa.
Christian H. Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners and creator of the index, said: “The average number of destinations people are able to access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, this overall increase masks a growing disparity in travel freedom.”
