Sen. Tom Cotton has called for a reassessment of protections for Americans targeted by Iran amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Israel.
In an interview with CBS News, Cotton, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, “We should probably revisit the threat that all persons face — remember, President Trump faced assassination threats from Iran as well.”
The Justice Department previously accused Iran of plotting to assassinate Mr. Trump, charging an Iran-based operative in connection with the case. Iran denied the allegations.
Cotton’s comments follow concerns over diminished security for former Trump officials, including Robert O’Brien and John Bolton, who once had U.S. Secret Service protection costing over $12 million annually.
Threats have ranged from abductions and assassination plots to cyberattacks. Iran’s supreme leader once shared an animated video depicting Trump’s assassination, and U.S. intelligence has linked Iran to hacking campaigns targeting Trump’s team.
Mr. Trump has called for peace, warning Iran against attacking the U.S. “in any way, shape or form.”
