Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has questioned his future after a humiliating penalty shoot-out defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has cast doubt on his future following the club’s shock penalty shoot-out defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town, a result described as one of the most humiliating in the club’s modern history.
United were moments away from crashing out in normal time after goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren before forcing penalties, where Bryan Mbeumo missed the decisive kick.
The loss marked the first time United have ever been eliminated from a domestic cup by a fourth-tier side.
“The players spoke really loudly about what they want today. I just want to apologise to our fans,” Amorim said. “When you don’t show up, something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again.”
Despite being backed with a £200m summer spend after replacing Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim admitted his side fell short in effort and mentality, with only Harry Maguire impressing in the defeat.
Goalkeeper André Onana was again culpable for key errors.
“I think football was really fair today. The best team won,” Amorim added. “That is more than a result. That is the biggest problem in the team.”
