Janet was reportedly sacked after she picked up a bracelet during her February shift, intending to return it but forgot it in her locker.
The family of Janet Damiro, a 71-year-old Nigerian cleaner dismissed by the London School of Economics, has defended her, describing the incident as an “innocent mistake.”
Janet was reportedly sacked after she picked up a bracelet during her February shift, intending to return it but forgot it in her locker.
Her daughter, Aina Damiro, told PUNCH that the item remained untouched in a coin wallet. “When approached about the bracelet, she was honest and cooperative. She retrieved it immediately and explained what had happened,” Aina said.
The family stressed that Janet, a long-serving employee, acted out of forgetfulness, not misconduct. “To see her name and image used to suggest wrongdoing is not only unfair but deeply hurtful,” they said.
They urged the public and media to reconsider the narrative, highlighting the treatment of older, low-paid workers. The university has yet to respond, while online support grows under hashtags like #JusticeForJanet.
