Four Mobile Policemen were killed in the shootout that followed the herders’ invasion of Udei.
At least four Mobile Policemen were feared dead following a fresh armed herders attack on Udei community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday. The attack, which began around 11 am in Asha, quickly escalated to Ortese, home to thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), forcing residents to flee.
According to Mr. Matthew Mnyan, a community leader, “the soldiers there moved in with their armoured truck… they engaged them for up to one hour in the bush.”
The attackers also attempted to storm Daudu but were repelled by a combined team of security forces and youths. “In what looked like a coordinated attack, they also attacked Udei at about 2 pm, and four Mobile Policemen were killed in the shootout,” Mr. Mnyan added.
The violence comes just over two weeks after a similar invasion of nearby Yelewata, which left over 200 people dead. Police authorities have yet to comment as DSP Udeme Edet did not respond to inquiries.
