The Nigerian Army has confirmed that 17 soldiers were killed and 10 others injured in a terrorist attack on its base in Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. According to Lt Col Appolonia Anele, the attack occurred during a fierce three-hour gun battle with about 300 bandits in Kwanar Dutse Forest.
“The criminals had attempted a night-time transit towards Kwatankoro Forest… However, their movement and actions were effectively disrupted by troops,” Anele stated.
The Nigerian Air Force conducted precision airstrikes on the retreating terrorists, causing “significant enemy losses,” although the exact number remains unconfirmed.
“Regrettably, seventeen brave and gallant soldiers paid the supreme price,” Anele added. Injured personnel are receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Oluwafemi Oluyede, expressed condolences to the fallen soldiers’ families and assured the best care for the wounded.
Further operations are ongoing.
