ASUU staged nationwide protests Tuesday, warning of a fresh strike if government fails to meet demands at Thursday’s Abuja meeting.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday held simultaneous protests across campuses nationwide to press home long-standing demands, warning of a looming strike if the Federal Government failed to act at Thursday’s scheduled meeting in Abuja.
From Obafemi Awolowo University to the University of Maiduguri, lecturers carried placards, chanted solidarity songs, and reiterated demands for full implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, release of withheld salaries, payment of arrears, revitalisation of universities, and adoption of UTAS over IPPIS.
At OAU, Chairperson Prof. Tony Odiwe accused government of “deliberately stalling” the Yayale Ahmed report, while FUTA’s Prof. Pius Mogaji said “all options remain on the table.” In Lafia, ASUU’s Sunday Orinya lamented deaths of lecturers due to “pauperisation,” and at UNILORIN, Dr. Alex Akanmu declared, “University workers are not slaves.”
National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, joined protests at Plateau State University, warning that campus calm may collapse if government continues to ignore demands.
