ASUU has urged the National Assembly, stakeholders, and the public to pressure the federal government into meeting its outstanding demands—including salary arrears, allowances, and implementation of past agreements—to forestall a looming nationwide strike.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued an urgent appeal to the National Assembly, relevant stakeholders, and the public to intervene amid growing fears of a nationwide academic strike. The union cited persistent delays by the federal government in fulfilling several long-standing demands, warning that continued inaction risks derailing the 2025 academic calendar.
ASUU’s Ibadan zonal coordinator, Professor Biodun Olaniran, emphasised that the union’s patience is waning amid broken promises and unmet agreements, particularly regarding unpaid allowances, salary arrears, and revision of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement.
At the press briefing, the union reiterated its resolve to avoid industrial action, but stressed that without meaningful action, the threat of a strike remains imminent. ASUU appealed for support to persuade the government into decisive action.
The union also criticised the implementation of IPPIS and the neglect of revitalisation funds, arguing these are symptomatic of broader systemic failures that jeopardise academic standards and staff welfare.
