Atalanta defeat Roma to seal Champions League qualification

Atalanta secured Champions League qualification on Monday with a 2-1 win over Roma, sealing a top-four finish in Serie A with two games remaining.

Ademola Lookman gave Atalanta the lead before Bryan Cristante equalised for Roma in the 32nd minute. However, Ibrahim Sulemana’s 76th-minute goal secured the win and ended Roma’s 19-match unbeaten run.

The victory moved Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, currently third, seven points clear of fifth-placed Lazio, ensuring their place in next season’s Champions League. Roma, meanwhile, remain one point behind Lazio and fourth-placed Juventus.

Despite the setback, Roma can still qualify for Europe’s elite competition. They face high-flying AC Milan next, while Juventus play Udinese.

“Reaching the Champions League would be a huge triumph for Ranieri,” the report noted, adding that Roma were relegation candidates before Claudio Ranieri came out of retirement last November to manage the club again.

Gasperini has been linked with replacing Ranieri at Roma next season.
