Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied reports suggesting he would step down for another candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied reports that he intends to step down for another presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement on Thursday, his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, described the claims as a misrepresentation of Atiku’s recent BBC Hausa interview.
“After a thorough review of both the video and transcripts of the interview – in the original Hausa and the English translation – it is evident that at no point did the former Vice President expressly state, suggest, or even imply that he intends to step down for anyone,” the statement said.
Ibe explained that Atiku only emphasised that younger candidates are free to contest, and if one emerges victorious in a competitive primary, he would support such a candidate.
He added that interpretative journalism should not be stretched “to the point of mischief,” stressing that insinuations from the BBC Hausa interview were inaccurate.
