Atiku Abubakar says he will bow out of the ADC presidential contest and support a younger candidate should such an aspirant beat him for the ticket.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he would accept defeat in the race for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket if a younger aspirant bests him in the contest.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, he affirmed: “If I run for office, and a young man defeats me, I will accept that. The party we have joined now prioritises youth and women.”
Atiku, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he left due to internal crisis and alleged infiltration by APC moles. He described the move as part of efforts to build ADC’s structures, stressing that “our goal is to establish the party structures at the state level.”
At 78, Atiku also admitted he could not yet confirm whether he would step forward once more as a presidential candidate, adding that the “beginning” is about strengthening the party rather than his personal ambition.
