He has been detained since September 2024 and is also linked to over 400 sextapes discovered in his office and home, reportedly unrelated to the embezzlement case.

Baltasar Engonga, the former Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, is facing up to 18 years in prison after appearing before a Malabo court on corruption charges.

Prosecutors allege Engonga orchestrated a scheme to divert public funds during his tenure at the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance from 2015 to 2020.

He has been detained since September 2024 and is also linked to over 400 sextapes discovered in his office and home, though those recordings are reportedly unrelated to the embezzlement case.

The national prosecutor recommended eight years for embezzlement, over four years for unlawful enrichment, and six years for abuse of power, along with a $1.5 million fine.

Videos reportedly feature high-profile women, including the president’s sister and ministers’ wives, sparking public outrage after leaks online.

Six other former officials are also on trial as proceedings continue this week.
