Equatorial Guinea jails Baltasar Engonga for eight years over embezzlement.
A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison for embezzlement.
The Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds claimed as professional travel expenses for personal use, according to supreme court press director Hilario Mitogo.
Engonga, a former head of the national financial investigation agency, was also fined $220,000. He and five other officials were accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Nicknamed “Bello,” Engonga gained notoriety in November after leaked sex tapes involving officials’ wives surfaced online while he was in detention. Some videos were allegedly filmed in his finance ministry office, sparking widespread online parodies.
