“Dear Valued Customer,” the notice reads, “Please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from ₦4 to ₦6 per message.”
Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and Ecobank Nigeria have increased SMS transaction alert charges from ₦4 and ₦5 to ₦6 per message, effective 1 May 2025. In separate customer notices, both lenders cited rising telecom costs as the reason for the adjustment. GTBank’s message stated: ‘This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by service providers.’ The move reflects broader inflationary pressures impacting Nigeria’s banking sector.
GTBank urged customers to retain alerts for transaction monitoring but offered an opt-out option via its website. Ecobank similarly attributed its hike to ‘new tariff structures.’ Analysts say the increases align with recent adjustments by financial institutions grappling with operational costs. ‘Transaction alerts help you stay in control of your account,’ GTBank’s notice added, underscoring the service’s security role despite the higher fee.
