Sixteen security operatives are feared dead and several others missing after suspected herdsmen, aided by local militia, ambushed a force moving into Agu Centre in Katsina-Ala, Benue State.

At least 16 security operatives are feared dead and several others missing following an ambush by suspected herdsmen and allied local militia in the Mbatyula/Mberev Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.

The incident occurred during an operation at Agu Centre, when the security force—led by ASP Danlami Usman “Dan Zuru”—was moving to flush out armed herdsmen. Witnesses said the attackers, reportedly numbering nearly 1,000, lay in ambush between Tse Agbami and Agu Centre, setting up a trap unknown to the advancing force.

Some of the operatives who survived the ambush were injured; several vehicles, including two Hilux vans, were burnt, and motorcycles were seized by the attackers. Local government officials confirmed that more than ten officers remain missing, and reinforcements have been deployed to the scene.

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested six suspects believed to be linked to the attack. Force PRO CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said, “The arrested suspects are already assisting investigators with useful information.” The Inspector-General of Police condemned the ambush as “cruel, unwarranted, and an affront on the good people of Benue State”, promising intensified operations to dismantle criminal networks.
