The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Mike Okonkwo, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s political and moral direction, lamenting the recent wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In an interview with DAILY POST, the cleric criticized both church leaders and politicians for the country’s current state.
“To be honest with you, I’m totally disappointed. I feel embarrassed… The church has failed,” he said. Okonkwo decried the lack of meaningful progress despite the high number of churches, asserting that many pastors preach opinion rather than the gospel.
He condemned politicians for focusing on elections instead of governance, saying, “When you perform, the masses will beg you to run.” He emphasized the need to restructure the country and lower election costs to attract credible leaders.
“Our politics requires drastic surgery,” he stated. “I just pray God will give us a leader that will have the willpower to perform this surgery for us.”
