Boko Haram and ISWAP factions clash in Sambisa Forest amid escalating internal power struggle.
Heavy fighting has erupted between rival factions of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Sambisa Forest area of Borno State, spreading to parts of Bama and Konduga Local Government Areas.
Sources told security analyst Zagazola Makama that the clashes began when a faction loyal to Abba Tukurre, supported by lieutenants Bunjumma and Ali Kalumbo, attacked rival camps at Gazuwa, a major stronghold in Bama. After hours of gunfire, Tukurre’s group reportedly seized several enclaves in Kashimeri, Katchi, and Bula Musaye.
Another commander, Abu-Rijal (Ba-Sulhu), mobilized reinforcements from the Mandara Mountains to join the fight.
By Wednesday night, the attacking faction had taken control of Gargash, Minna, and Garin Massa Kaje.
Makama noted the infighting could reduce attacks on civilians temporarily, though security forces under Operation HADIN KAI remain on high alert.
