Police in northern Thailand discovered an eight-year-old boy living in filthy conditions among dogs after being severely neglected by his drug-addicted mother and older brother.
Authorities say the boy, unable to speak, could only bark to communicate.
The child was found in a stilt hut during a raid on June 30. Both his 46-year-old mother and 23-year-old brother tested positive for drugs and were charged with consumption. Local activist Paveena Hongsakul, who brought the case to police attention, said, “He didn’t speak, he just barked. It was pitiful to see.”
According to Paveena, the mother had taken the child to school only once to claim a government subsidy, then kept him at home. Locals reported seeing her begging, while children were warned to avoid the boy.
Officials have placed the boy in a children’s home. “The boy will be given a chance at a good life,” said Paveena. “We’ll follow up to make sure he gets everything he needs.”
