“It’s important to approach these conversations with empathy and solutions, not condemnation.”
Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has dismissed reports claiming he suggested that retired footballers who become broke should be jailed.
The 2013 AFCON winner faced backlash after an online comment he made was misinterpreted and circulated widely. In a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight”, the ex-West Brom star said, “These statements are completely false and misrepresent my views.”
Ideye clarified that he advocates support, not punishment, for ex-players struggling after retirement. “I would never suggest punitive action towards anyone who struggles financially,” he said, calling for training, mentorship, and resources instead.
The 34-year-old urged empathy in such discussions: “It’s important to approach these conversations with solutions, not condemnation.” He condemned the reports as damaging to his image and warned the media against spreading falsehoods.
His advice to players to save early for retirement sparked the misunderstanding. “Footballers, start saving for your future from day one,” Ideye reiterated.
