NNPP chieftain, Buba Galadima, warned that Nigeria risks civil war if the government appoints a “notorious” retired Court of Appeal judge as INEC chairman, alleging the current administration has already compromised INEC in favour of the APC.

Buba Galadima, a prominent member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has cautioned that Nigeria could descent into civil unrest should a retired Court of Appeal judge—whom Galadima described as “notorious”—be appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Galadima said, “Come November, there are rumours all over the place that this government is nominating a just retired Court of Appeal judge who is known for notoriety to be the chairman of INEC. I wish it is not true. Because if that man becomes the chairman of INEC, be rest assured that this government is inviting a civil war in this country.”

He further accused the current administration of “disregarding the rule of law” and claimed the electoral commission under its leadership is already biased in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress. “The INEC chairman has already rigged the election for APC. They brought somebody that is the secretary of the party that went to court for APC as acting national chairman, and he was rewarded with chairman of INEC,” Galadima alleged.

Galadima said such moves would undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system, calling on citizens to remain alert and ensure that individuals with questionable records are not entrusted with oversight of electoral processes.
