Shehu gave no details about the nature or severity of Buhari’s illness.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari is currently receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom, his longtime spokesman Garba Shehu has confirmed.
Shehu made the statement on Thursday amid growing concerns about Buhari’s health and absence from public view. He noted the 81-year-old former leader fell ill while on a routine medical trip.
“It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said. “He became ill there, but I am happy to announce… he is doing well in his recovery.”
Shehu gave no details about the nature or severity of Buhari’s illness.
Buhari, who served from 2015 to 2023, is widely known for frequent foreign medical trips. Reports say he spent over 230 days abroad for treatment while in office.
A family source told Premium Times, “Some say he fell ill in Nigeria and was flown out. Others insist he only took ill after arriving in London.”
“He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery.”
