Nigeria’s economic hub, Lagos, and parts of Ogun State face a 25‑day blackout beginning Monday, with businesses expected to lose hundreds of billions of naira.

The outage, announced by Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution, will last from July 28 to August 21, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

Both firms said the shutdown is due to maintenance of the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV line by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, warned the blackout would severely impact productivity.

“The cost will run into hundreds of billions of naira,” he told Daily Post. “Hotels, hospitals, supermarkets, and manufacturers cannot afford to shut down; they must switch to costly alternatives like diesel.”

While acknowledging the hardship, Yusuf said the sacrifice is necessary to strengthen Nigeria’s weak national grid.
