Two people were taken to hospital early Sunday morning after a car crashed and flipped near London’s Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in Piccadilly Circus. Emergency services responded to the scene at around 5:25am.
Photos show the wrecked vehicle overturned near the Criterion Theatre, with debris and a smashed lamppost scattered nearby. The historic fountain, popularly known as Eros, appears undamaged.
A witness claimed on X: “Roads leading to and away from it seem to be closed off by tape. Biggest roundabout in London closed off on a weekend, what a day.”
According to the London Ambulance Service, one person was transported to a major trauma centre, and another to a local hospital. “Our first paramedic arrived on scene in less than four minutes,” a spokesperson said. “We treated two people.”
The Met Police have been contacted for further comment. Several roads remain closed as authorities investigate the cause of the incident.
