Brighton came from behind to stun Chelsea 3-1, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice after Trevoh Chalobah’s red card.
Brighton came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, taking advantage of Trevoh Chalobah’s red card to claim a dramatic late victory.
Chelsea had led through Enzo Fernandez, who headed home a Reece James cross deflected off Kaoru Mitoma. But the game turned in the 53rd minute when Chalobah, covering for Andrey Santos’ error, fouled Georginio Rutter. Following a VAR check, he was dismissed, marking Chelsea’s second red card in as many league matches.
Brighton capitalised in the 77th minute as substitute Danny Welbeck headed in Yankuba Minteh’s cross to level. Maxim de Cuyper then nodded in from a corner in stoppage time before Welbeck struck again to seal the win.
The defeat leaves Chelsea in seventh, with pressure mounting on manager Enzo Maresca after just one win in five games. Brighton rise to 10th, continuing their strong record against top-six clubs.
Chelsea now face Liverpool amid mounting injuries and suspensions.
