The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned of a potential outbreak of Chikungunya virus in the country, urging citizens to take urgent preventive measures.
In a Friday advisory via its official website, the NCDC said recent epidemiological reports show an increased risk in several states.
The mosquito-borne viral disease, transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes — also responsible for dengue and Zika — causes sudden fever, severe joint pain, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, and rash.
“Although rarely fatal, Chikungunya can result in long-term joint problems in some patients,” the agency stated. Nigeria’s tropical climate and ongoing rainy season, it added, provide ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Preventive tips include using insecticide-treated nets, applying repellents, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and eliminating stagnant water.
The NCDC urged health workers to watch for cases and report promptly, assuring that surveillance and response measures are being strengthened nationwide.
