Chinese researchers unveiled Bone-02, a medical adhesive that heals fractures in three minutes, potentially replacing metal implants.

Chinese scientists have announced the creation of a medical bone glue capable of repairing fractures in just three minutes, a development they describe as a breakthrough in orthopaedic treatment.

According to Global Times, the adhesive, called Bone-02, was unveiled on September 10 by researchers in Zhejiang Province. The project was led by Lin Xianfeng, associate chief orthopaedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, who said he was inspired after observing how oysters cling firmly to underwater structures.

“The adhesive can achieve precise fixation within two to three minutes, even in a blood-rich environment,” Lin said. He added that the glue is naturally absorbed as bones heal, removing the need for secondary surgery to extract implants.

Lab tests and clinical use on more than 150 patients showed strong bonding capacity, with bones glued together displaying a maximum force resistance of over 400 pounds.

The glue also demonstrated a shear strength of about 0.5 MPa and a compressive strength of around 10 MPa, raising hopes it could one day replace traditional steel plates and screws.

Scientists noted the innovation may also reduce risks of infection compared to conventional implants.
