China has declared full support for Nigeria and warned against U.S. interference following threats of military action over alleged Christian persecution.
China has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria and called on the international community to respect the country’s sovereignty following threats of military action by the United States.
According to PUNCH Online reporting, the Chinese government expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, commending his administration for steering Nigeria along a development path suited to its national conditions.
In a statement published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China’s website, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a press briefing on Tuesday in Beijing.
“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats,” Mao said.
Her comments came amid tensions triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning that Washington could deploy troops to Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians — a claim the Nigerian government has repeatedly denied.
Beijing’s stance aligns with its long-held position of non-interference in domestic affairs of sovereign states.
