A cholera outbreak in Niger State has killed at least 12 people and hospitalised over 230 across several local government areas.

A cholera outbreak in Niger State has killed at least 12 people and hospitalised over 230 across several local government areas. The outbreak was first reported on Sunday in Shiroro LGA and has since spread to Minna, Bosso, Magama, Bisa, and Munya.

Health officials confirmed that 239 individuals are currently receiving treatment in various primary healthcare centres. In response, the state government has opened an isolation facility at the old wing of the Late Sen. Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna.

Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, stated, “We have established treatment and isolation centres in the affected LGAs to contain the outbreak.” He added, “Aggressive sensitisation campaigns are ongoing, targeting religious organisations like CAN and Islamic groups, as well as the eight emirates in the state.”

Dr. Dangana also praised Governor Mohammed Bago’s swift response and acknowledged support from donor agencies. Meanwhile, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health, identified Chanchaga, Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro as the most severely impacted areas.
