Full completion of the Toyo Tunnel and the New Route to the Sea is expected by early 2027.

Colombia is advancing construction of the Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri Toyo Tunnel, which will become the longest vehicular tunnel in Latin America once completed. The 5-mile main tunnel is part of the “New Route to the Sea,” a 23-mile corridor of tunnels, bridges and viaducts connecting Medellín to the Urabá region.

According to Blu Radio, authorities have finished lining the main tunnel, completing 99% of the project’s first section. The second phase, linking Santa Fe de Antioquia and Giraldo, has surpassed 60% progress and involves 11 tunnels, 13 bridges and nearly eight miles of open roadway.

“This project will cut nearly five hours off travel between Medellín and future Caribbean ports,” officials said. The $675 million investment—supported by Colombia’s national government, the Antioquia administration and Medellín’s City Hall—is expected to reshape regional trade. Authorities anticipate full completion by early 2027, significantly boosting exports and economic integration.
