“We must begin to believe again — in ourselves, our heritage, and our future,” Otti tells Constitution Review Committee
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has called the ongoing 2025 Constitution Review a vital moment for Nigeria to address structural challenges and foster inclusive governance. Represented by Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu at the South-East Zonal hearing in Owerri, Otti emphasized unity beyond political divides and urged Nigerians to “believe again in ourselves, in our heritage, and in the future of our country.”
Otti warned against proposals to create 31 new states, citing “enormous cost implications” and risk of expanding bureaucracy. He instead advocated equitable representation within existing structures. He endorsed the establishment of state police with clear standards and oversight.
On gender inclusion, he supported additional legislative seats for women but urged political party reforms to ensure genuine female participation. He also urged caution on full local government autonomy, warning of increased financial burden.
The governor backed constitutional recognition of free basic education and called for a focus on practical reforms over idealistic perfection, praising Nigeria’s willingness to revisit its laws.
