High-ranking Ugandan official convicted of intimate partner violence; victim Orikiriza finds justice after years of abuse and financial control.
A high-ranking government official in Uganda has been convicted of intimate partner violence, following repeated physical abuse and financial control. The verdict marks a significant step in Uganda’s fight against violence toward women.
Orikiriza met her partner in 1999, and they had two children. Behind closed doors, she endured repeated physical assaults and financial manipulation, with her husband taking control of her business.
“Despite reporting the abuse to police, no action was taken,” said Orikiriza, who felt frustrated by her husband’s wealth and influence. She later approached the Police Professional Standards Unit and the Resident State Attorney, receiving support from IJM, including legal advice, counseling, and risk management.
Last month, the perpetrator was charged and found guilty at Mwanga II Court. Orikiriza shared, “I have been sleeping well since he was convicted.”
While her case concludes successfully, experts note 1 in 3 women globally experiences violence, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.
