Court rules Trump’s global tariffs illegal, pauses decision for appeal

A federal appeals court ruled most of Trump’s global tariffs illegal but paused the decision until October 14 to allow an expected Supreme Court appeal.

A federal appeals court has struck down most of former President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, ruling that the law he relied on did not grant him authority to impose the sweeping duties.

In a decision delivered Friday, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said Trump overstepped his powers in implementing his signature trade policy, which dramatically reshaped US economic ties worldwide. The ruling undermines a central pillar of Trump’s agenda.

The court, however, paused the ruling’s effect until October 14 to allow the administration time to appeal. Trump is expected to take the case to the Supreme Court, setting up another high-stakes legal battle over the extent of presidential power in trade matters.

The White House has not yet commented.
