A federal judge in the United States has blocked the department of homeland security order barring Harvard University from enrolling international students.
A U.S. district judge has halted a DHS directive barring Harvard University from admitting international students, days after Secretary Kristi Noem announced the policy. Judge Jeffrey White also prohibited the government from arresting, detaining, or deporting affected students pending a lawsuit challenging the abrupt cancellation of over 4,700 study visas since March. The ruling comes after two dozen students sued over the termination of their legal status, which Vice President JD Vance defended as prioritizing American applicants.
Vance had earlier vowed to deport student visa holders deemed “not in the U.S. interest,” accusing them of displacing native-born students at elite universities. The Trump administration’s crackdown faced immediate legal pushback, with the court’s intervention marking a temporary reprieve for foreign students. The case highlights escalating tensions over immigration policy ahead of the 2024 elections.
