Lyon will remain in Ligue 1 after a successful appeal, leaving Crystal Palace’s Europa League hopes in doubt.
Lyon will remain in Ligue 1 next season after winning an appeal against their demotion due to financial irregularities. French football authorities had relegated the club last month, but the decision has now been overturned—potentially impacting Crystal Palace’s place in the Europa League.
Lyon, who qualified for the competition, had previously agreed with Uefa to withdraw if relegated. That arrangement is now void, and Palace’s spot is under review due to Uefa’s multi-club ownership rules.
Eagle Football Holdings, owned by John Textor, has significant stakes in both Lyon and Palace. Uefa prohibits clubs under shared ownership from competing in the same European tournament.
Palace argue Textor lacks decisive influence, but a ruling is expected later this week.
“Olympique Lyonnais welcomes the decision to keep the club in Ligue 1,” the club said. “Today’s decision is the first step in restoring confidence.”
The verdict could determine whether Palace, as FA Cup winners, can participate in Europe next season.
