The Nigeria Customs Service has explained that fuel smuggling persists despite the removal of subsidies due to the significant price difference between Nigeria and its neighboring countries.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said, “As long as there is a price differential, people will exploit it.”
Adeniyi noted that smugglers take advantage of the cheaper pump price in Nigeria to illegally transport petroleum products across borders for profit.
He added that Customs has intensified its monitoring and enforcement efforts, especially along border communities, to curb the practice.
