The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted contraband valued at over N921 billion at the Apapa Port, Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi announced Wednesday.
The seizures, made between January and April, included expired food, unregistered drugs, and restricted security items. “We are not pretending that when we roll out a very serious project of that magnitude that there will be no hitches,” he said, referring to the Customs Unified Management Information System (B’Odogwu), currently being piloted at PTML and Tin Can Island.
Adeniyi highlighted rising smuggling trends, particularly of sexual enhancement drugs and misdeclared imports. Containers were found with concealed pharmaceuticals, drones, walkie-talkies, and expired margarine. He linked the surge in seizures to enhanced surveillance and inter-agency collaboration, noting a 34.6% increase in duty-paid value compared to 2024.
He warned of national security risks and urged public cooperation in reporting suspicious imports, while praising Apapa Command officers for their diligence.
