Dangote Refinery fires all Nigerian staff after union move

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has terminated all Nigerian workers less than 24 hours after most joined the PENGASSAN union, citing a plant-wide “reorganisation” and sabotage concerns.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed its entire Nigerian workforce barely a day after the majority joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

Political commentator Imran Wakili disclosed the mass sack on X, writing, “Dangote Refinery has officially laid off all of its Nigerian workers under the guise of ‘reorganization’, less than 24 hours after 90% of them joined PENGASSAN.”

According to a company memo dated September 25 and signed by Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, management said the action followed “a total re-organisation” prompted by reported sabotage in several refinery units.

Affected employees were instructed to return company property and secure exit clearance, while the finance department was directed to calculate entitlements for payment.

The refinery thanked the workers for their service. DAILY POST reports an ongoing dispute between the refinery and PENGASSAN over unionisation, which observers say may escalate following the abrupt dismissals.
